Hogtown Rake interview with Matt Galloway

CBC Radio's Matt Galloway.

CBC Radio’s Matt Galloway.

Matt Galloway is the host of Metro Morning, one of the top morning radio shows in Toronto. And he dresses well above the standard – when we worked together, we were often the only two guys on the radio floor in jackets (never mind wearing pocket squares). I finally got to ask him about his approach to personal style…

Why do you like to dress well?
I’m on the radio, so I could just wear shorts and t-shirts, but I also have a public job in that we have people coming in from outside for interviews etc. In an old-fashioned way, I suppose I like the idea that people look good at work, that it doesn’t look like you just stopped in on the way to the cottage. Look good, sound good.

What does the way you dress reveal about who you are?
Someone who likes detail and discipline. I am obsessive about little things and love it when someone puts extra effort into tiny details. I also don’t take clothes, or myself, all that seriously.

Who is your style icon?
Sammy Davis Jr. Solid in a cardigan, bow tie, tuxedo…

What are your top 3 favourite places to shop for men’s clothing in Toronto and why?
Theodore 1922. Miranda makes me look good.
Gravity Pope. I have a shoe problem.
Socking Behaviour. I have a thing for socks. They’re like secret weapons.

One piece of advice for the man about to embark on improving his wardrobe?
Sweat the small stuff. Socks, pocket squares and shoe laces. And learn how to tie a bow tie. The sense of accomplishment you get from it is oddly satisfying.
