“…there was a sea of distressed studded denim and tie dyed t-shirts, and one guy wearing a three-piece flannel suit, which was me. And at first, I think the students thought I was a spy.”
Bruce Boyer
That’s an excerpt from the first episode of “Unbuttoned” my new podcast with Bruce Boyer, dedicated to the foundation of his personal style: Ivy League. We hear stories from his time in high school until he left academia in the early 70s. Including his discovery of tweed jackets, khakis and penny loafers. The rise of 60s counter culture. And why Bruce thinks the Ivy League approach is still relevant today.
What a great episode. Growing up in a New England town 15 minutes from Newport, RI, my youth was all prep/Ivy League. Hearing you and Bruce talk about it gave me inspiration to embrace my roots. I’ve drifted fashion-wise over the years, but I always wonder why when I dress in this style it feels right. I think it’s because it will always be part of who I am. As I’ve gotten older, I notice that the fashion that is right for me, is the one I don’t notice. If I am constantly aware of what I am wearing, it feels like a costume. When the clothes are almost invisible, it is the right style for me to honestly pull off.
Thanks for this podcast, looking forward to the next episode.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and experiences, Tom. And well said. The next episode comes out Wednesday, full of so many great stories about Savile Row…
