Ross Porter is a Canadian broadcasting icon. Currently the President and CEO of JAZZ.FM91 and member of the Order of Canada, he is also one natty dresser. Being in the jazz world, that may not surprise you. But his approach might. Ross is a very humble, down-to-earth guy and that translates into how he thinks about personal style…

Why do you like to dress well?
I enjoy clothes, I like the way they can make you feel. I look at what is going on in the day and dress accordingly. I dress in a way that I think is respectful and shows people courtesy.

What does the way you dress reveal about who you are?
It says a lot about my wife Denise. If it wasn’t for her, I’d still be wearing the suit I wore to my high school grad and you’d be dodging the buttons as they fly off. Denise has impeccable taste; she’s taught me the importance of solid colours, crisp white shirts and kept me from buying the same thing over and over again.

Who is your style icon?
I like the way that Jeff Goldblum dresses. I think he’s often an overlooked guy in Hollywood who’s actually making a fashion statement.

What are your top 3 favourite places to shop for men’s clothing in Toronto and why?
I’m always looking for the essentials, with a critical eye and at a great price. Downtown, there’s Tom’s Place while if you go north of the city there’s the Harry Rosen Outlet store on Hurontario and HR2 at Vaughn Mills.

One piece of advice for the man about to embark on improving his wardrobe?
Look for bargains, but buy quality over quantity. Instead of getting four sports jackets for $99 that are fused and what have you, buy the one that’s on sale for $399 but marked down from $1200.
